#5 - Moulin Rouge!

I know, this movie is full of gayness, but this is a great movie. It has a great story, great style, great songs and great acting. Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman, as Christian and Satine, have great chemistry, which you wouldn't necessarily foresee if you didn't actually see it on screen.

I don't know how many times I have seen this movie, but it gets better and better for me each time. Baz Luhrman directs a wonderful movie about love, heartache, jealousy and deception. The love that the two main characters share, which must be forbidden and the events that lead to the painfully sad ending, seems true and undeniable.

The styling and tone of the movie are wonderful as well. It is almost cartoony, but the viewers still get sense of the bohemian lifestyle that these people live in. At times it is breathless.

Also the song selection and how they incorporated them into the movie was seamless. With the modern songs and how they changed them and connsected them to the story made this movie even better for me.

I still remember winning a game of Trivial Pursuit with the answer being Absinthe, which is ingested heavily throughout the movie. We kicked ass in that game, Matt and I.

Loved Moulin Rouge!. Check it out there will be no disappointment.

Meet the Robinsons

My wife and I took our youngest son to this movie a few weeks ago and for some reason I just haven't put the time in to do a review of it. I don't really know why. Maybe it was because Meet the Robinsons didn't really strike a cord with me in any way. I am not saying that this was a terrible movie, but it was one that wasn't very interesting. The CG was cool, but the story of a young orphaned inventor who time travels to the future didn't have enough bite in it to even interest my son. He actually slept through part of it.

There wasn't a whole lot of humour in it, like what you fin in the Shrek movies, Cars, Ice Age I and II, and even Happy Feet. The funniest part in the movie was when the T-Rex couldn't catch Lewis in the corner. This scene was shown in the trailer and I really found this to be the only really amusing part of the movie.

I am sure I will be renting this movie when it comes out on video, but I don't really care to see it again. I am sure I will have to though, just to make my son happy.

Music and Lyrics

This was a movie I wasn't overly excited about going to. My wife and I were out on a date...7th anniversary. We went and had an expensive dinner, enjoyed each others company, had good conversation while partaking in a few beverages (had a Manhattan Martini..fucking gross, just about ruined my night) ..which was really nice. We had a great time. Now this was the first time in a long time we didn't have the kids with us so we also wanted to catch a movie that we wanted to see. Well my wife wanted to go to Ghost Rider. Thank god we didn't get in because it would have put a damper on an otherwise great date. Instead we went to Music and Lyrics starring Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore.

This movie was a really nice surprise. Like I said, I wasn't really looking forward to this movie. Not a big Drew Barrymore fan. I hate the way she talks out of the side of her mouth. Drives me crazy. I really enjoy her breasts though...very nice!

Hugh Grant I enjoy though. Love Notting Hill. Probably my favorite chick flick. I can watch it over and over and I even admit watching it by myself every once and a while. Anyway, I went in to this movie with low expectations, but came out of it with a smile on my face.

The basic premise of the film is that a washed up 80's pop star gets a second chance at success by having an opportunity to write a new song for a Brittany/Christina-like character played by Haley Bennett. As he is not the greatest lyricist, he asks Drew's character, who is his plant lady, to help write the lyrics. As you can assume, they banter back and forth, have a few laughs, a few squabbles but eventually write a tune for this girl and fall in love.

Throughout though, Barrymore and Grant have great chemistry, feeding off of each other and through this you feel that these characters actually like each other. Surprisingly as well I actually enjoyed Barrymore in this. She played her character with innocence and sincerity that was really nice to see from her. In most of her movies, i don't 'get' her acting. I don't know what it is but I just don't like her normally. I enjoyed her here which like I said earlier was a really nice surprise.

Hugh Grant was his normally goofy, bitter character, but with this he brings a very welcoming dry humour that really made the movie for me. A lot of his dialogue is self-deprecating which always amusing to me. He also brings a selfishness to this character that he works though by the end of the movie that shows his abilities as an actor.

Brad Garrett was also good as Grant's manager, who supports his client through everything...even the performances at the local State Fair, which seems that is all Grants character can book.

Anyway, I recommend this movie. Good date movie, probably one to rent with the girlfriend and enjoy a night alone together and then go have some hot steamy sex when its over...if you are lucky. Go see it you'll enjoy it!
