Olympics: Opening Ceremony - The Games of the XXIX Olympiad officially begin in Beijing with the Opening Ceremony at National Stadium, known as the "Bird's Nest" because of its network of steel girders. The ceremony includes the parade of nations and lighting of the Olympic cauldron and spotlights the culture of China with a cast of 10,000 performers. Friday 7:30 et/6:30 ct on NBC.

Excellent way to light the cauldron!!! I can't believe that old gymnast had the strength to run around the upper stadium for that long without stopping!! Loved the way the flame spiralled up the outer edge of the cauldron. That was really spectacular. China, you did a fantastic job!!!
